As a dance educator, I strive to create a safe, fun-filled learning environment for movers of all ages and backgrounds. I specialize in teaching creative dance to small children, as well as contemporary dance technique, improvisation, composition and partnering to teens and adults. Drawing inspiration from classical modern dance, ballet, jazz, release technique, somatic practices and yoga, I place emphasis on each individual student’s experience of their own body. I am especially concerned with helping dancers to achieve safe and appropriate skeletal alignment through release of muscular tension and relinquishing of habitual movement patterns. My classes for young children focus on creative exploration, basic ballet and modern dance terminology, musicality and joyful expression. I have extensively studied dance education pioneer Anne Green Gilbert's BrainDance Curriculum, and utilize her concepts of brain-compatible creative dance in my classes for all ages.
My contemporary dance training is primarily in release-based technique, which honors each individual mover's body and emphasizes pathways of movement rather than copying of static shapes. Classes for both beginning and intermediate movers will start with gentle warm up activities, gradually increasing in rigor and intensity. We'll ultimately progress towards fun, full-bodied movement phrases. Creative expression and improvisation will be introduced and encouraged.
